Said to be inhabited centuries ago, it is believed that in the 12th century, King Parakramabahu had built the Kalinga Yoda Ela, which demonstrates the prosperity at that time.


Also the earth at this location appears to have a reddish tone and according to folklore, the colour is a result of the wat between King Elara and King Dutugemunu.
